What is Cranial Osteopathy?
Cranial osteopathy is a branch of osteopathy that works with a subtle rhythm known as the involuntary motion (IVM). The IVM is a summation of the body’s various cyclic movements, including breathing, heartbeat, metabolism, and the movement of cerebrospinal fluid. While it is influenced by movement and position of the bones of the skull, osteopaths trained in cranial techniques are able to feel the IVM throughout the body’s tissues (though most often on the head or pelvis) and use this rhythm to detect areas where the body may not be working as well as possible.
They are then able to focus treatment on the IVM, using specific, very small movements to restore optimal balance and function. Cranial osteopathic techniques are incredibly gentle, safe and effective and are particularly suitable for treating babies and children. Cranial technique is sometimes referred to as cranial massage or cranial sacral therapy by practitioners other than osteopaths.
