EMF Radiation and your Health

Electric and magnetic fields (EMF) are invisible fields that surround all electrical devices. EMF arises from our environment from a variety of sources such as phone masts, mobile phone base stations, poor building electrical wiring and electrical household appliances, including computers, microwaves and cell phones.

The UK government, after careful review the scientific literature has officially, acknowledged that EMF exposure can create adverse health effects, such as nausea, headaches, fatigue, muscle pains, dizziness, irregular heartbeat and loss of memory 1.

At present, results from scientific research suggesting that EMF can cause serious health problems, such as brain tumours or miscarriages, are negative or at best inconsistent. However, two meta-analysis studies (where the data from many studies are pooled to make the results more significant) do point to EMF exposure possibly increasing the risk of childhood leukaemia 2, 3. Currently, there are no standards in NZ regarding EMF exposure. Anyone concerned needs to take a proactive approach. Simple steps to reduce home EMF exposure include:

  1. Remove electrical devices from the sleeping area (eg clock-radios and bedside phones.)
  2. Move the bed away from areas close to outside wall electrical transformers (eg wall meters)
  3. Turn off appliances at the wall and disconnect them when not is use (especially electric blankets)
  4. Place mobile phone chargers etc away from frequently inhabited spaces.
  5. Keep a good distance from electrical devices (eg TVs), EMF's diminish greatly after a few feet.
  6. Check the house for EMF 'hotspots' with help from a Dowser and/or using a Trifield Meter.
  7. Look into the various devices currently available to mitigate EMF's from phones etc.
  8. For more information talk to an experienced Dowser local to you.
